"B & B with a Mission Statement"
The Oaxaca Learning Center, founded in 2005, houses a tutoring center focused on math, science, and English language classes. The OLC's after-school tutoring and summer school programs are offered free of charge to teens and college-age students. Founder Gary Titus and staff have managed to arrange scholarships to secondary school and beyond for many deserving students. If you would like to read the full mission statement, look here:http://www.tolc.org.mx/mission.php I stayed for three weeks. I was teaching a drawing workshop at the university. My wife was able to stay for part of this time, when she left I moved to the second room. I can report both rooms are tidy, nicely decorated, fully screened with private baths and bedside telephone. Outside the rooms is a patio cactus garden, and colonial style fountain, and hammocks. Breakfast includes a homemade, special recipe, granola that includes amarinth, the grain of the Aztecs, fresh tropical fruit, and yogurt. Coffee is made as you like it, and tea or herbal teas are on hand. Staff is very accommodating. I am allergic to down pillows. They found some foam pillows for me. My wife has a milk allergy, so we kept a carton of soy milk in the fridge for her daily breakfasts. Clearly, this is not a hotel. During the day the courtyard becomes a classroom. My wife spent a few mornings as a volunteer English language partner for one of the students, which she found rewarding. It cost slightly more for the two of us, but for myself it was $210, weekly rate, bed and breakfast. Actually, I know of some fine hostals here that might cost the same amount with air conditioning and flat screen TV's in the room. Truth is, one doesn't need a.c. in Oaxaca, the rooms have ceiling fans and wifi, so I don't miss the TV. At the Oaxaca Learning Center I saw my money being used to support a very worthy cause. There is a global movement toward responsible tourism, and the OLC fits nicely into this movement. Highly recommended. - Kevin, Kultztown, PA |
"To stay there is to be immersed in hospitality"
Mary and I would like to send our heartfelt thanks to you, your staff, and the students after our month-long stay at the Learning Center! To stay there is to be immersed in hospitality, and to immediately become a member of a wonderful family, whose purpose is always to be moving in a positive direction. Our room(s) were clean and comfortable and the breakfasts were exquisite. Your location in the Centro Historico was perfect for our general enjoyment of Oaxaca. Furthermore, we felt totally secure and had no worries about our personal safety. You are doing a wonderful job creating an environment of opportunity for the students, and we look forward to participating in Intercambios and other Learning Center events in future years. Thanks again! - Drew & Mary Horton, Westcliffe, CO "Feeling right at home in rooftop apartment" What can I add to previous posts? It's our second visit to the Oaxaca Learning Center (TOLC). Two years ago we happened upon the B&B during the September Independence Day celebration. This time we've rented the rooftop apartment for the month of December. Sadly there's no fresh breakfast available (like in the B&B rooms) but it's great fun to start the day with coffee and fresh fruit on our own sunny patio. The staff have thought of everything to make for a comfortable stay. The apartment as well as the downstairs rooms are clean and efficient. We really appreciate the good reading lights, mattresses and free wifi connection! Seems like there's always a fiesta going on somewhere in town. Today we enrolled in a Spanish School to study next week. Shopping for food becomes an adventure when spread amongst the many markets and shops. There is opportunity for a vegetarian cooking class with the resident chef at TOLC who's just compiled a book of recipes. We've discovered the nearby Oaxaca Lending Library run by local expats--a fantastic resource just a few blocks from TOLC. There are also lots of activities posted online, so you can choose to experience the tourist sites or the more local cultural venues. I am pleased to recommend this cozy spot to anyone who wants to help out or be a part of such a worthwhile venture. The location, facilities and competent staff will provide a secure resting place while you set off to explore Oaxaca! - K Hagwell, Bellingham WA |
